Moving to a large city can be frightening.
Even though you are surrounded by people, it can feel as though you are getting lost in a crowd. As the trend of young millennials moving to large cities becomes more evident, it can be difficult to feel comfortable in an area where you feel disconnected. Urban living can be exciting and interesting, but in order to feel that way, you need to fully embrace city living. Consider these ideas to make you feel a little more comfortable and welcome in your large city.
1. Make Connections
Making friends and connections within your city is a necessity any time you move, but it can be difficult in a large city. People are usually less likely to reach out to you if you are new in a city, so you need to be proactive with making connections. Find people who are passionate about the same things that you are. You may want to connect with smaller groups of people such as a book club or sports team. Perhaps you should take an art class. Many cities have many different kinds of activities that appeal to different varieties of people.
2. Get to Know Your Neighborhood
Take a look around where you live. Find where the basics such as the grocery store and drug stores are. Once you have the basics down, find activities in the city that you can do with your friends. Find some of the cool restaurants or bars. Find some places that you want to make your favorites and that you feel comfortable in.
3. Be a Tourist
This may seem a bit strange, since you want to feel like a local, but sometimes exploring popular areas in a city can make you love the city more. Exploring areas where you normally would not go in your daily life will help you appreciate the diversity of your city and help you appreciate your city as a whole. Also, when you have visitors come from out of town and they want to be tourists, you will know the right spots to go and feel like an expert. Try new things that you would not be able to experience in your hometown, and find what makes your city unique.
4. Make Your Apartment Your Own
Find ways to make your apartment feel like home. If you don’t do this, your city isn’t going to feel like home. We have discussed ideas that will work for studio apartments. Folding beds are a necessity in urban environments. They not only save space, but they also make rooms multipurpose. We especially recommend horizontal Murphy beds for urban apartments. They can fit into smaller spaces and create a welcoming space. However, do more to your apartment than just install a bed. Some horizontal murphy beds can even double as a couch if certain attachments are added. Do your research and find some decorating blogs that cater to apartments. Apartment Therapy is a good go-to for great ideas for smaller spaces.
5. Welcome Others into Your World
Now that you have made your apartment your own, welcome the friends that you have made into your apartment. When someone comes into your home, that can really strengthen your friendship. It doesn’t need to be anything super formal, it can be something casual such as a game night or movie night. Create a community of your own that you feel comfortable and welcome in.
Urban living does not need to be scary. Find ways to feel welcome and don’t be afraid to try something new. You just may like it!
