More About Murphy Beds
The murphy bed, also called a wall bed, pull-down bed, or fold-down bed, was so named after it’s inventor, William Lawrence Murphy, who first applied for its patent around 1900. The hinges attached to the bed allow it to be folded up and stored against walls, in cabinets, or inside closets. This spacing-saving innovation led to the creation of other murphy-type furniture pieces including murphy sofas, murphy tables, and murphy bed desks.
